This is notice that the 2017 Annual Springfield Christmas Parade, originally scheduled for Saturday, December 2nd, has been cancelled.

The board of the Springfield Community Parade Corporation arrived at this decision with a heavy heart and after much deliberation.  Vital organizational pieces of the parade were losing momentum and volunteers.
For the past 5 years the parade board and committee have diligently sought volunteers for the committee and the Board– for both producing the parade and for eventual assumption of Board roles and leadership. Print media, e-mails to previous entries, social media and word of mouth has been fruitless in obtaining the volunteer staffing needed to produce the parade. It is a yearlong planning, involvement and commitment effort.  Any entry fees already sent to the committee will be returned.

This parade has been an enthusiastically anticipated annual Springfield event. With few exceptions, the parade has grown each year in entries and parade watchers with more than 10,000 spectators in 2016. What has been extraordinary community support and growth has also demanded more yearlong committee and volunteer support to keep it going. This has placed a large strain on the organizers and its leadership.

SCPC and Springfield Parade Committee thanks the entire community for all its support and involvement over the years. The tradition has had an awesome reputation with sponsors, community members, and volunteers.

Looking to the future, the parade organizers hope that a parade or holiday celebration in some form might materialize for next year and following. The parade committee invites anyone interested to watch for notice of a re-organizational/brainstorming meeting the early part of 2018 – to continue Springfield’s long and proud heritage of coming together to celebrate the holidays.

Background on the Christmas Parade: The parade has a proud heritage of community holiday celebration since 1953. Many organizations have been responsible through the years for producing the parade. Currently, the Springfield Community Parade Corporation was formed in 2003 as a 501c4 organization (to take the handoff from its then producers, the Springfield Chamber of Commerce), specifically to stage the annual Springfield Christmas Parade. SCPC has been staging the parade for the past 14 years.

Thank you to everyone for your support,

SCPC/Springfield Christmas Parade Committee
Marilee Woodrow, Board and Parade Chairman
